What is Country Swing?

Before we discuss what this bizarre new form of country dancing is that seems to have just appeared out of no where, let me first say that this is not Two-Step.
Now that all the other people looking to learn Two-Step are gone, lets get right into this!
Simply put
Country swing is one of the newest trending styles of country dancing. It’s an upbeat partner dance taking inspiration from many other types of swing (Lindy Hop, West Coast, and East Coast) with a country twist. From beginner level to advance, you can see amazing spins, dips, and even lifts (yes flips may be involved).
With the increasing trend of country music lovers, and the need for more in person socializing events, Country Swing has taken the social dancing scene by storm. It inspires the younger generation to get out, meet new people, and develop a skill all at once making it a fantastic hobby to add to your list.

The technical side
It is a simple, four count footwork partner dance. It involves a lead, the dance partner who’s thinking about what move they’re going to lead next, timing, and musicality. And a follow, the dance partner who only has to think about looking pretty while twirling, oh, and accurately interpret the lead’s signals (don’t come for me I do both and this is a joke, although a funny way to explain roles). Unlike Two Step, this dance does not travel in a circle around the entire dance floor. It stays in place, making it perfect for crowded country bars and concerts. And unlike West Coast Swing that moves along a slot, Country Swing creates a star like pattern from above of both partners coming together and back out in different directions depending on the move.
How do I get into it
How I made my way into the country world was by going to country bars. I met some people there who Two Stepped and did some other country dances, and quickly found myself scrolling through social media videos about Country Swing. Lots of saved videos later, I started to try out my skills with friends and found it was an amazing dance for beginners! Only one small problem… there was no where that taught it where I am located. That is until I founded Okanagan Country Swing right in the heart of the Okanagan, Kelowna. After learning so many things about Country Swing while trying to learn it on my own, I decided I wanted to make this journey easier and of course super fun for others!

Verdict
Overall, do I recommend Country Swing? Absolutely. If you’re looking for a super fun beginner friendly dance to show off on the dance floor, look no further. My mission is to collect all people who like country and get us to socialize while learning a new skill! I have never found a more rewarding form of dance besides partner country dancing, and I hope to spread the word to all Kelownians that Country Swing has made it to town.
