Okanagan Country Swing Dancers in the studio, 2026

So, you’ve decided to try country swing dancing—congratulations! Whether you signed up for a weekly drop in lessons in Kelowna or Vernon, taking that first step onto the studio floor is incredibly exciting.

However, if you're standing in front of your closet wondering, "Do I need real cowboy boots?" or "Will I stick to the floor in my running shoes?", you are not alone. It’s one of the most common questions beginner dancers ask us at Okanagan Country Swing.

To make sure you show up feeling comfortable, stylish, and ready to spin, here is your complete guide on what to wear to your very first country swing class in the Okanagan.

1. The Best Footwear: Smooth Soles Are King

When it comes to country swing, your shoes matter more than the rest of your outfit combined. Swing dancing involves plenty of spins, pivots, and quick footwork, which means you want footwear that lets you turn smoothly without catching on the floor.

  • Cowboy Boots (Best Overall): Leather-soled or worn smooth-soled cowboy boots are ideal. They offer great ankle support and glide effortlessly over hardwood or dance studio floors.

  • Suede-Soled Dance Shoes or Dance Sneakers: If you come from another dance style or own ballroom/latin shoes, those work fantastically.

  • Casual Sneakers (With a Catch): If you don't own boots yet, clean casual shoes like Converse or Vans work fine for your first class. Pro Tip: Avoid high-traction running shoes with heavy rubber grips. Deep treads catch on the floor, which puts unwanted twisting pressure on your knees during turns.

Test Spin: Try completing a 180° spin on one foot on a smooth floor to see if it takes too much effort before committing to that pair of shoes!

Beginner Hack: If your only option is a grippy pair of running shoes, wrap a strip of gaffer tape or heavy fabric tape across the ball of your shoe for your first class! It temporarily reduces grip so you can spin safely.

2. Choosing Your Outfit: Comfort & Mobility

Country swing is high-energy physical activity! You don't need a fancy Western costume to attend class—most students wear casual, comfortable everyday clothes.

For Leads & Follows:

  • Tops: Wear breathable fabrics like cotton t-shirts/tank tops, polo shirts, or light button-downs. You’ll be moving around and working up a sweat, so short sleeves or lightweight layers are best.

  • Bottoms: Fitted jeans with a bit of stretch, leggings, or comfortable pants give you full freedom of movement. Avoid overly baggy jeans that might catch on your boot heels.

  • Dresses & Skirts (Optional): Follows who love spinning in skirts or dresses should ensure they wear comfortable dance shorts underneath for security during dynamic turns and dips.

3. A Few Quick Etiquette & Prep Tips

To keep classes enjoyable for everyone, keep these three studio tips in mind:

  1. Clean Shoes: Since we dance in clean studio spaces in both Kelowna and Vernon, please wipe off dirt or mud from outdoor boots before stepping onto the dance floor.

  2. Mind the Accessories: Large rings, sharp belt buckles, or bulky jewelry can catch on your partner's clothing or scratch hands during fast spins. It’s best to keep jewelry simple.

  3. Bring Water & A Smile: Swing dancing is a fantastic workout, so bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during breaks!
